Gamepad Controller Design
Purpose
The objective of this project was to design a modern gamepad controller, akin to those used for Xbox or PlayStation, utilizing SolidWorks. The goal was to create a symmetric, ergonomic design, incorporating a printed circuit board (PCB) and ensuring all necessary components, such as buttons and joysticks, were properly integrated.
Overview
The design process began with creating the main shape through initial sketches and extrusion. The handgrips were designed using loft profiles and mirroring for symmetry. Guided curves and fillets were used to refine the shape. Button and joystick placement involved precise modeling of button areas and joystick bases. Shelling and structural support were added, including screw standoffs. The controller was split using a split line, and ribs were created for additional support. PCB integration involved creating a cutout and placing buttons on the PCB. The joysticks were designed, assembled, and mirrored. The final assembly included screws, fasteners, and an interference check to ensure a seamless fit.
Results
The final gamepad controller design is robust and user-friendly, featuring a well-defined shape, ergonomic grips, and integrated buttons, joysticks, and a PCB. The design process showcased the use of various SolidWorks features and techniques, resulting in a functional and manufacturable gamepad controller. The project demonstrated a comprehensive approach to product design, emphasizing precision, ergonomics, and functionality.
